About the Work
"I
don’t
have
anything
erudite
to
say
about
this
painting.
As
a
child
I
loved
horses
more
than
anything.
When
my
family
came
to
visit
my
grandmother
in
the
school
holidays,
driving
all
the
way
from
West
Auckland
with
five
of
us
packed
into
a
Morris
Minor
convertible,
we
nearly
always
went
to
visit
Uncle

(James

at
the
Sarjeant.
It
was
torture,
which
was
only
relieved
by
seeing
this
beautiful

It
must
have
been
a
favourite
because
it
always
seemed
to
be
on

Description
Large oild painting depicting three horses (from left: one white, one black and one brown). The horse nearest the viewer has a rider who is lighting a pipe. The horses are cantering with the white and black horses acting feisty, the black horse is nipping the white one on the head and is showing the whites of its eye. The horses are wearing harnesses across their chests and bridles with bells attached. The gentleman is wearing white breeches, a red waistcoat with blue jacket and a tall tophat on his white hair. He has a rolled blanket across the horse in front of him. The horses are on an unsealed road, with grass behind them. To their left in the distance is a body of water with some houses/buildings on the far side of the water. A small boat with a white sail is at the far water's edge. Above the water are some tiny birds flying above the houses. The sky is filled with a mixture of dark grey and pale grey clouds with small patches of blue sky visible. The horses are casting long shadows so it appears to be quite late in the day.
