View of a man being publicly humiliated from the stocks. He is surrounded by figures, including guardsmen and a mob with tools. The scene is based on the historical events surrounding Titus Oates (1649–1705), an English perjurer who fabricated the "Popish Plot", a supposed Catholic conspiracy to kill King Charles II. His punishment included being pilloried at the Gate of Westminster Hall, where he was pelted with eggs.
