About the Work
This work was produced as a result of Peter Ireland's 1995 Tylee Cottage residency. This painting is the first in a very definite series looking at the intersections of particular European artists and the construction of a New Zealand art history. The first series included artists such as immigrants James Nairn, Edward Fristrom and emigrants such as John Weeks and Flora Scales.

Description
Image painted onto two adjoining paper supports of two profiles, one male with a pony tail, the other a queen wearing a crown. Drapery in both top corners, background is sky with clouds, at centre top is a vertical word BECAUSE. The work is painted in blues and violet with yellow lettering.
