The title of this work is a play on the name of the American painter John McCraken (b.1934, d.2011) who’s signature form was a painted plank leaning against a wall at an angle, which entered the physical space of the viewer, extending a two-dimensional painting into the three-dimensional realm. The title is also a reference to John Wyndham’s apocalyptic science fiction novel ‘The Kraken Wakes’ (pub. UK 1953) about an elusive alien race that takes up residence in the depths of the ocean and attempts to systematically wipe out the human race.
