About the Work
The
Sarjeant
Gallery
is
lucky
to
have
several
examples
of
Bonheur’s
work
in
the
collection,
including
this
bronze
ram.
Although
primarily
known
as
an
animal
painter,
Bonheur’s
small
statues
show
the
same
attention
to
detail
and
personality
as
her
large
canvases.
This
bronze,
a
similar
version
of
which
is
held
by
the
Metropolitan
Museum
of
Art
in
New
York,
shows
a
ram
lying
down
and
resting.
Although
quieter
than
Bonheur’s
more
dramatic
horse
paintings,
this
work
is
in
keeping
with
the
more
tranquil
nature
of
the
subject.
This
sculpture
forms
a
pair
with
the
bronze
ewe
also
in
the
Sarjeant
collection.
